Course Content

Effective Technical Writing: identify the characteristics of technical writing that work best, to ensure clarity and ease of use.

Planning the content: Learn simple, quick and powerful planning techniques to identify what should and should not be in a document.

Research: how to gather the material you will need; interviewing; subject matter experts.

Structure: structure the content; logical sequence; table of contents; appendix; index.

Plain English: identify the characteristics of the "Plain English" writing style; how to apply it to all documentation and make it user-friendly.

Target the reader: how to identify and include different target reader groups when you write.

Clarity: using the correct words to explain something; eliminate complicated waffle; using bullet points and numbered lists; handling jargon and acronyms.

Brevity: avoid duplication, verbosity, redundant words and phrases.

Layout and appearance: use of white space; colour; images and diagrams.
 

Spelling, Punctuation & Grammar: improve the way you write; avoid common errors in punctuation and grammar; use sentences and paragraphs correctly.

Writing for overseas readers or translation: avoid clichés and idioms; ambiguities in English that cause errors in understanding; reduce translation costs.

Readability: improve your writing style and increase readability, so that users can read the content quickly, understand the message, and not be hindered by complicated language.

Work Smart in MS Word: hints and tips to work faster; unlock powerful functionality to improve your writing style; add an automatic Index; identify keywords for the Index.

Practice: there are written and verbal exercises to check and emphasise what has been learned.
