Technical Author's choice: PDF format

The PDF file contains the documentation in read-only, printable form, so that the end user can print copies as required. The presentation of the final printed manual can be excellent.

PDF files include text search facilities using the free Adobe Acrobat reader. You can download a copy here:

If the main purpose is for good quality printing, then PDF is a good choice.

However! If the main purpose is for on-screen Help, you need to note these points about PDF:

Limited but workable search facilities. It is not as quick or easy as HTML Help for finding information.
Requires the Adobe Acrobat Reader, which is available free from the Adobe web site. However, not all users have it installed by default on their PCs. This means someone has to install it. In organisations where the IT department controls what goes onto a PC, they may have to authorise its installation, although this shouldn't be a problem.
